Seungmu(僧舞) literally means the dance of Buddhist monks. So it used to be performed by them until the end of Goryeo dynasty. However, it began to be developed into a folk dance mostly by Kisaengs because Joseon dynasty adopted Confucianism (instead of Buddhism) as their governing ideology.

Seungmu dancers wear a very long-sleeved robe, which is useful when they express their struggle with a lot of mental anguish. And then they play the drum in order to rarefy those evil passions.

Not only for the history and the meaning of Seungmu but also for the mixture of flowing movements and stillness, it is often referred to as the most beautiful Korean dance! So please enjoy it! :)
