Liner notes:
- Wind’s Four Quarters is from the short story “Swordsworn” in Sword and Sorceress 3, edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley.
- Eumenides is from a moment of mixed self-pity and rage.
- Reject is from a moment of unmixed self-pity.
- Jirel of Joiry is based on the four short stories featuring that character by C.L. Moore.
- Lute Lessons is based on Dreamrider by Sandra Miesel.
- Gil-Shalos is based on the Darwath Trilogy by Barbara Hambly.
- Arafel’s Song is based on the Tree of Swords and Jewels by C.J. Cherryh.
- Morgaine is based on The Gate of Ivrel by C.J. Cherryh.
- Medic is from a rather awful fanzine short story I once wrote.
- F.A.P. stands for “Feline American Princess. I have eight cats. ‘Nuff said.
- Lammas Night is the Mystery. I refuse to tell the ending!
- Kerowyn’s Ride is the Murder, from the beginning of the next set of Valdemar stories. For the curious, Kerowyn is Kethry’s granddaughter.
- Patterns in Amber is based on the Amber books by Roger Zelazny. Also the Mayhem – I don’t know of any family more so inclined.
- Elven Harper – take that, prom queens!
- Some Kind of Hero may work its way into a novel someday, but for now, this is the whole story.
