Lodz from the drone | Lodz from the bird's eye view | Poland

▸ The bad fame has dragged on Lodz for two centuries, mainly because it has always had a different character than other Polish cities. From the moment it began to develop dynamically as a factory settlement, i.e. from 1823, it was a salt in the eye of Poland of the Romantic era. When dreams of regaining independence were dreamed in Warsaw and Krakow, money was simply made here.

It was commonly said that it is a truly American city in Polish lands, which, apart from the capitalist ethos, was also supposed to be evidenced by the perpendicular street grid, rarely found in Europe. A remnant of the unique identity of Łódź today is the vivid memory of the factory owners who, next to Rajmund Rembieliński, who decided to locate a factory settlement here, are considered to be the founding fathers of the city.

After changing the political system to a socialist one, the authorities tried to erase the capitalist tradition of Łódź, including leading to the ruin of the historic center, which greatly damaged the aesthetics of the city. Finally, after 1989, when the great state-owned textile factories collapsed, the situation of a huge number of inhabitants really worsened. The increase in unemployment had an impact on the general image of the city, which in Poland began to be strongly identified as the center of poverty, pathology and crime.

Today, Łódź has caught the wind in its sails. However, the bad fame is still reflected in real estate prices, one of the lowest among voivodship cities, which may be a good signal for consumers.

Łódź was created thanks to the work of visiting craftsmen, and later also manufacturers. From the very beginning, it was a cosmopolitan city, and based on the city's ancient history, the myth of the four cultures that built Łódź was created: Polish, German, Jewish and Russian. The mention of the latter is quite an abuse, because the Russians, as the invaders, constituted only the administrative apparatus and did not contribute significantly to the development of the city. Interestingly, at key moments in the history of the city, representatives of different cultures were able to work together and help each other, e.g. by financing each other's temples or schools.

Although many tenement houses have been restored, there is still a very large number of buildings in need of renovation. The mythical revitalization, which in Poland is mistakenly understood as ordinary renovations, is a long-awaited rescue for Łódź. Although the city is changing dynamically, the backlog is unmissable. Throughout the period of the Polish People's Republic, the authorities led to the degradation of several thousand historic tenement houses.
