This lecture describes the intriguing variation in the architecture of dune thicket trees. I describe hedge formers, lateral spreaders and vertical growers, and explain how these architectures dominate in different parts of the dune landscape and in the post-fire succession. The huge plasticity evident in these trees is suggestive of strong gene by environment interactions. Indeed, their architecture (or behavior) is hugely contingent on their ecological context.
