Case Study of POTS Treatment
Background
Patient Profile: A previously athletic and high-performing college student who developed severe symptoms over the course of a year, significantly impacting his daily life and ability to engage in sports or even basic activities.
Symptom Onset: Symptoms began after a series of health issues, including a head injury and infections (COVID-19 and mono). Key symptoms included dizziness, palpitations, and feelings of passing out, particularly while driving.
Progression of Symptoms: Over time, the patient experienced worsening symptoms, including weight loss, muscle twitching, and reduced sweating. By April, he had lost about 20 pounds and reported visual disturbances.
Prior Tests: Multiple specialists were consulted, including cardiologists and neurologists, but standard tests (e.g., echocardiograms, Holter monitors) showed no significant findings.
Key Findings
Neuropathy: Examination revealed sensory nerve dysfunction, particularly in the lower extremities, with diminished ability to sense pain and temperature. This suggests a neuropathic component to his symptoms.
Venous Pooling: Significant venous pooling was observed when the patient was lying down, indicating issues with blood circulation and regulation.
Treatment Approach
Rehabilitation Focus: The treatment strategy involves addressing the neuropathy and improving sensory and motor outputs to restore normal autonomic function.
