Lunar 7th Month Hungry Ghost Festival is a time where locals believe that the gates of hell open for the month and the spirits roam free. There are many superstitions and taboo that governs what we can and cannot do during this time.

The Taoist and Buddhist Federations have a vastly different take on what the festival truly means compared to the social collective belief. I followed some temple mediums who trance Dua Di Ya Pek (Heibai Wuchang / Black White Impermanence) into Lim Chu Kang Cemetery to observe how they handled this festival and found the entire procession to be more enjoyable than scary.

It's got a whole festive vibe going on with bright light, loud music, and even clowns on stilts. Not quite the scary festival I grew up thinking it was.

Song Background: Originally written in 1995 as incantation for Tua Li Ya Pek possession (大二爺伯 Da Er Ye Bo; Black and White Impermanence). In 1999, the incantation is produced and released as song based on chinese opera melody honouring the Chinese traditions and folk religion. Tua Li Ya Pek is often heard in temples honouring the underworld deities, the song is sung by temple followers during Tang Ki (乩童 Spiritual Medium) worship. Underworld deities (Tua Li Ya Pek) possession incantation is sung instead of chanted as opposed to Chinese heaven deities.
