A severe cyclonic storm named 'Hamoon' made a fierce landfall at Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, on October 24, 2023, leaving a trail of destruction in the district and impacting the lives of over 470,000 people, including almost 2,500 Rohingya refugees.
Around 38000 households have been damaged in the local communities leaving more than 40,000 people temporarily displaced, while over 900 shelters housing Rohingya refugees have been affected, leaving nearly 800 people temporarily displaced.
According to media, as of 25 October, three fatalities and at least six injured people have been reported in Cox's Bazar.
Cox’s Bazar District is experiencing serious communication disruption, preventing access to real-time information, particularly in rural areas and refugees’ camps. In refugees’ camps and adjacent host communities, Disaster Management Committees and Cyclone Preparedness Programme have been activated.
The affected people are suffering due to insufficient relief reaching the affected areas. Many are spending the night under the open sky as their houses have been destroyed.
Thousands of trees unrooted. People are starving. They have no roof over their head. They need food and construction materials. Help them.
Cyclone Hamoon wreaked havoc not only in Cox's Bazar district town but also the and surrounding areas including Maheshkhali, Kutubdia and Chakaria.
Many trees and power poles were uprooted on the road. Since then, electricity and mobile networks have been disrupted.
Locals aid that although the Cox's Bazar district administration distributed tins, rice, and cash to the affected people for two days, it was insufficient.
Cox's Bazar Deputy Commission Shahin Imran said that the cyclone has affected 71 unions and two municipalities including Cox's Bazar, and Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar district. Besides, 354 electricity poles were uprooted. Some 23 transformers were damaged and 496 electric wires were snapped.
Besides, the power supply snapped in 800 places as trees collapsed on electric wires. Some 37,854 houses have been damaged in the district. The number of people affected by the cyclone in the district is 476, 549, the DC added.
