As a local kid and underdog story as a walk-on, WR Jesse Matthews became one of the more popular San Diego State Aztecs football players in recent memory. Despite having his 2020 season shortened by the pandemic and playing in an offense that had almost zero consistency at the QB position, the 6 foot, 190 pound Christian High graduate finished 7th in school history in receptions (174), 11th in receiving yards (2109), and tied for 12th in receiving touchdowns (15). Jesse also delivered when it counted most, winning offensive MVP of 2 separate bowl game (2019 New Mexico Bowl & 2021 Frisco Bowl) & combining to post 21 receptions for 385 yards and 4 touchdowns in the 3 bowl games he played in. He also had 3 touchdowns at big moments in the game in a crucial game at UNLV in November 2021 as the Aztecs marched towards the Mountain West Western division title, with his 9 reception, 133 yard performance against Boise State in the regular season finale helping the Aztecs clinch their spot in the conference title game. Thanks so much for the memories Jesse; hopefully we will be watching you in the NFL on Sundays!
