Prof RN Iyengar has been doing some of the most influential work in recent times on the history of astronomy of ancient India and he is probably the pre-eminent scholar on Natural Sciences in Sanskrit texts. His research work has shed much needed new light on the past and will significantly contribute to understanding the astronomical tradition and growth of knowledge in India prior to what is called the Siddhantic period of the early centuries of the common era. His research work fills, to a large extent, the gap between the Vedic Period (pre 2500 BCE) and the Aryabhata-Siddhanta period (500 CE).
Prof Iyengar's research work shows the growth and evolution of observational astronomy and the creation of empirical knowledge in Bharat. Ancient Hindus were empirical scientists, and they documented a lot of information, developed theories and ideas and laid the groundwork for future discoveries.
There are three important issues which we will discuss with Prof RN Iyengar over two episodes: :
First, He will discuss the enormous observational astronomical information in the Vedic tradition. Which refutes the claim was that there was hardly any observational astronomy..
Second, He will be detailing the uniqueness of the tradition and shows the indigenous development in works like Parashara Tantra & VriddhaGarga
The third aspect is the Continuity of scientific naturalism from the Vedas onwards, passing through the Brahmanda Purana, Parashara tantra and Vrddhagargiya Jyotisha, into the siddhanta period.
