Usuki City, located in southeastern Oita Prefecture, is an old castle town full of evocative streetscapes from the Middle Ages, as well as Stone Age relics, the National Treasure Usuki Stone Buddhas, and other sights. It is easy to reach from neighboring Oita City, making it perfect for a day-trip escapade.

Usukiyaki pottery, which is crafted through traditional techniques in Usuki City, boasts a history stretching back around 200 years to the late Edo Period. It is based on a rare artform that was once lost, and the pieces are lovingly designed as “vessels to frame a meal.” Usukiyaki consists of white porcelain adorned with a “rinka” flower pattern that makes ingredients from the bountiful seas and mountains of Usuki dazzle, while adding flair to the dinner table. Although materials from the past are extremely rare, there is an active effort to promote the appeal of Usukiyaki today.

This time, our host visited Usuki SARAYAMA, a multipurpose complex that offers tableware and food. Our host first had a chat with the owner Mr. Usami to learn more about Usukiyaki.

At Usuki SARAYAMA, visitors can watch the pottery-making process from outside the workshop, and can join Usukiyaki-making experiences using the “katauchi” molding method, as well as “kintsugi” with Usukiyaki. Our host was able to make Usukiyaki pottery using genuine techniques together with a craftsperson in the atelier. His original piece looked fantastic!

While it takes around a month to receive the piece you made, if you opt for the kintsugi experience, you can bring home the pottery you repaired on the day.

The gallery also exhibits new Usukiyaki artworks and more, and you can actually hold the pieces crafted in the workshop and purchase those that catch your eye. Plus, tea and sweets are served in Usukiyaki tableware in the tearoom, offering a full day of fun.

We hope this video inspires you to visit Usuki SARAYAMA to enjoy the beautiful floral creations of Usukiyaki pottery!
