St. Louis Cemetery #3 ~ I wrote a poem a day for 28 days in New Orleans this past month, and now I’m going through and illustrating them/combining them with pictures and film from the journey and sharing them with you lovely persons.

This is surprisingly the only poem about death in this collection. You might have seen in some of my sharing that I have a thing for hanging out in graveyards. Nola cemeteries are just so EXTRA to me. Each time I walk into one, I kid you not, I get all tingly and lightheaded. I like to imagine the energy is so strong down there from all the souls smushed together in their above-ground forever homes (read about these kinds of graves if you feel like getting into a rabbithole, it’s crazy), and I also just have a feeling that the veil between the two worlds is thinner in Nola at all times than other places.

These words came while walking through St Louis #3 on a cloudy day. Here they are in their full form:

I am walking through the veil
Through air liquid thick with ghosts
It almost feels like I’ve grown gills
Floating down the graveyard rows

Time has stopped here and each sound
Seems whispered from the stones
Families lie as thick as thieves
Secrets muddled in with bones

I used to fear to dwell right here
The place the dead sleep sound
Even now, I tremble standing
On this hallowed ground

But today I am amphibious
As between two worlds i flow;
Now, I swallow, i’m not afraid
Of where they went, of where I go

I hope you enjoy the poem and video!
