We've been slow at work, so I got a short notice Friday off. I packed up my cnoe, camp gear, and some poorly planned food, then headed out for an adventure. This is a real popular destination in the summer, but considering it was very early may, mediocre weather, and a Friday, I managed to feel alone the whole time. I started at Deep Cove North Vancouver, and camped at Granite Falls. Granite Falls is a developed campsite with outhouses, bear cashe, and a fire ban, and it can get super busy in the summer. As per Strava I paddled 25km there, but only 20km back. I guess I took a more efficient route back(opposite shore), and I paddled 1.4km/h slower on average on my way back fighting the tide. Speaking of the tides, it was really interesting to paddle in salt water, it's a totally different world out there. As a fjord off the Burrard Inlet, its not open Pacific Ocean water, but it is ocean water non the less. It had rugged coasts, barren islands, and all sorts of marine biodiversity that I'm not used to. As a predominantly lake paddler, it was super interesting to see jellyfish, starfish, seals, sea otters, crabs, musscles and what not along the way. Add that to historic Buntzen Powerhouse 1 & 2, and you have the makings of a pretty epic night out!
