This song was written during a period of deep introspection, where I was trying to comprehend my responsibility in regards to my life, salvation, and sanctification. I realized that I had an erroneous view of what God could and couldn't do in my life. I couldn't just wait passively for God to give me the life I dreamed of. Although God did all the work of saving me, and it was of utmost importance for me to realize that Jesus death, resurrection and victory over sin and death could be imparted to me as a gift, nothing that I could earn or be required to work for, still I needed to know my role in growing near Christ. Paul says to make every effort to grow in holiness. This is a sobering reminder to me that I have an awesome responsibility to tend and care for my own soul, and the best way I do this is in acts of simple faith and obedience. Were there not a real object of my faith, that being the Person of Jesus, I would truly be lost. It is in Him that we move and breathe and have our being. May you be truly blessed by this song today, and realize that the Lord rewards those who seek Him with an open mind, an open heart, and a contrite spirit within them.
