Join Elizabeth Zharoff, voice coach and opera singer, as we analyze and compare singers attempting the “unsingable” Diva Dance from the Fifth Element.

Originally sung by Albanian coloratura soprano, Inva Mula, the blue alien opera scene is legendary not only because it sounds totally dope, but because it is so difficult to sing. In fact, Eric Serra (the composer of the funky 2nd half) didn’t intend for it to ever be sung - but that won’t deter an ambitious high soprano.

Did you know that the first half comes from standard operatic literature? It is excerpted from Lucia di Lammermoor, by Donizetti. In this scene, the title character has gone completely bonkers… which is why it’s nicknamed “Lucia’s Mad Scene.”

All of the performances for this video were reported as live, non-enhanced performances, in the original key.

This video, and all of the reaction videos on this channel, are made for educational purposes. The original content that is “reacted” to is analyzed by a professional singer and teacher, who uses the performance to highlight vocal technique and further discuss vocal anatomy. In addition, musical theory and style choices are also often analyzed and discussed.

While the video does use the entire song (as things such as vocal endurance must also be considered), there are many pauses. In addition, often the original content is rewinded to examine a particular vocal element. During pauses, the reactor goes into detail on how sounds are produced, and why or why not they are good. The pauses often last a long time, so much so that this video cannot be considered a replacement for the original material. A link to the original video is always placed in the about section, and viewers are encouraged to watch it without pauses and commentary.

If you wish for further proof of the educational purpose of this channel, please look at my other videos on vocal exercises and anatomy.
