STORYLINE:
Seeding drones are being used in Rio de Janeiro city to recover green areas and minimize the impact of climate change.

Rio de Janeiro’s Municipal undersecretary for the environment and climate, Artur Miranda joined the works of sowing seeds in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro on Friday.

“The central remedy to the climate crisis is nature conservation and restore nature that has been degraded. There's no mystery, we need to stop destroying our trees and start planting them again. That's the truth." said Miranda.

Like many regions of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro has suffered from intense heat waves, contrasted with other moments of torrential rain and landslides.

According to city's authorities the drone will be a tool to speed up the planting process and to access hard-to-reach areas and hillsides in the city, which are so important for lowering the temperature and preventing landslides.

The equipment can seed an area of 50 hectares, approximately 50 soccer pitches, in one day.

The aim of the first phase of the project is to reforest one million trees, and the effects should begin to be felt within two to five years.
