PR 5788 is a recovery flight, to compensate for the cancellation of flights PR 2790, PR 2788, and PR 2782, all from Puerto Princesa to Manila. The flights were delayed and eventually cancelled due to the situation in Manila's main airport. Runway 06/24 was closed for 36 hours after a Xiamen Airlines Boeing 737-800, skidded and eventually rested on the side of runway. This caused flight cancellations and long delays as Manila's second runway (Runway 13/31) can only be utilized by narrow-body aircraft.
