Chua-ay is based on a popular folk song from the Philippines that depicts the Igorot tribes at work, pounding the rice by means of a huge mortar and heavily weighted posts to separate the rice grains. The Igorot people live and work in the mountains of Luzon, the largest island of the Philippines. This piece begins with bird calls serenely chanted by two sopranos, followed by a set of rhythmic variations on the repetitive three-note theme of the Chua-ay. Foot stomps suggest the mortar and pestle action that also enhances the earthy character of the song. Arranged by Sir Fidel Calalang, UST Singers choirmaster

LNHS Voice Chorale

The Ligao National High School Voice Chorale is a school-based choir of Ligao National High School, Ligao City, Albay. Year 2014 when the choir is formed and it is under the mentorship of one of Bicolandias Youngest Conductors, Mr. Celger V. Venzon.

The choir won the most prestigious choral competition in the Philippines, the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) Youth Categor in 2014. The Group is a recipient of the 29th Awit Awards and National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ 9th Ani ng Dangal Award.

In the international chorale scene, LNHSVC clinched the Grand Prix during the 4th Bali International Choir Festival in Bali, Indonesia in August 2015 and in 2016 Busan Choral Festival and Competition in Busan, South Korea.

In 2017, the group again won in the 13th Busan Chorale Festival and Competition by bringing home top prizes. It also won first prize at the 65th edition of the Torrevieja International Habaneras and Polyphony Competition held in Torrevieja, Spain on 27 July 2019.

The LNHS Voice Chorale is the only high school choir in the Philippines to have garnered such awards and can be considered as the best high school choir in the Philippines.
