Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century palace on the foothills of the Alps in the south of Germany. It is located in the municipality of Schwangau, above the incorporated village of Hohenschwangau. The castle was built for King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a way for him to escape from public life. Seven weeks after his death, it became open to the public and is now one of the most popular palaces in Europe, attracting 1.4 million tourists per year.
