How to Make a Drill Press Vise | DIY Metalworking Project
In this video, I walk you through the process of making a sturdy and reliable drill press vise using basic metalworking techniques and tools. Whether you're a seasoned DIY enthusiast or just starting out, this project is a great way to enhance your workshop setup. Follow along for step-by-step instructions and tips!

⚡Here TWO methods You can make this vise!!!!⚡
1. without welding
2. using welder

Method 1: Tapping a Thread for M20 Threaded Rod
In this method, you will create threads directly into the metal where the threaded rod will be inserted. This is done using an M20 tap to cut the threads.

Steps:

Drill a 18.5mm hole in the metal piece where you want to secure the threaded rod.
Use an M20 tap to cut threads inside the drilled hole.
Insert the M20 threaded rod into the newly threaded hole.
This method ensures a clean, precise fit for the threaded rod, providing strong and reliable threading directly in the metal.

Method 2: Welding an M20 Nut
Alternatively, you can weld an M20 nut to the metal piece instead of tapping threads.

Steps:

Drill a hole slightly larger than the diameter of the threaded rod (around 20.5mm) in the metal piece.
Position an M20 nut over the hole.
Weld the nut securely to the metal piece, ensuring strong and uniform welds around the nut's perimeter.
Insert the M20 threaded rod through the nut.
This method is often quicker and can be more practical if you have welding equipment, providing a strong and secure attachment for the threaded rod.

Each method has its advantages: threading offers a seamless, integrated look and strong connection, while welding a nut can be faster and easier if you have the necessary welding tools. Choose the one that best fits your skills and equipment!

Materials Used:

Mild Steel U-Shaped Metal Beam (12 cm in width by 5 cm in height)
Angle Iron (40x40mm, 3mm thick)
M10 Allen Bolts
M20 Threaded Rod
Tools Used:

Angle Grinder (with cutting and grinding discs)
Drill Press (or a regular drill) with bits for drilling 8.5mm, 11mm, and 20mm holes in metal
M10 and M20 Taps
Allen Wrench
Permanent Marker, Ruler, and Sharp Scraper for marking
Steps Covered in the Video:

Cutting the Metal Beam and Angle Iron: Using an angle grinder, I cut the U-shaped metal beam and angle iron to the required sizes.
Drilling Holes: I drill precise holes in the metal pieces using a drill press, with specific sizes for different components.
Tapping Threads: I show how to tap M10 and M20 threads into the drilled holes to accommodate the bolts and threaded rod.
Assembly: The pieces are assembled using M10 Allen bolts and the M20 threaded rod, creating the clamping mechanism.
Finishing Touches: I clean up the edges and make sure everything fits together smoothly.
Why Make Your Own Drill Press Vise?
Creating your own drill press vise not only saves money but also gives you the satisfaction of building a tool customized to your needs. It's a practical project that enhances your skills in metalworking and tool making.
