American politics is dramatically unstable right now because people with traditional theological viewpoints have finally realized that their ideas are unprovable and unpopular.

In the early 20th century, scholarly theological liberals came to the conclusion that neither the Christian nor Hebrew Bibles were accurate representations of history, and also that many of their moral narratives condoned and encouraged mass injustices and atrocities...

They began modifying Judaism and Christianity to be about the values rather than about the stories, but rather than listen to their wise counterparts, traditionalist theologians doubled down on fundamentalist and literalist interpretations.

Faced with a complete intellectual defeat, fundamentalist religionists have decided that they will continue believing things they know to be unprovable and instead, they are weaponizing tolerance against people who believe in science and empathy. It's totally insincere though.
