The 2017 Land Rover Discovery luxury SUV offers real value despite its significant cost. With sedan handling and ride quality, room for 7 people and their cargo, and the ability to comfortably and safely get off-road, this new vehicle replaces the LR4 and returns the Discovery model to the U.S. market after a 13-year hiatus. Unibody construction with aluminum in the frame benefits handling and efficiency, leaving the new Discovery about 800 pounds lighter than the retired LR4.
The new Discovery offers two engines, a 340-hp gas V6 and a 254-hp 6-cylinder diesel. The gas engine can get the SUV to 60 mph in less than 7 seconds, but has EPA estimates of 16 mpg city and 21 highway. The diesel improves mileage to 21 mpg city and 26 highway for an additional $2,000. Land Rover offers plenty of other ways to boost the Discovery’s price, including backseat entertainment, a trailer hitch with Trailer Stability Control, and an “Activity Key,” a waterproof bracelet that unlocks the doors.
