According to Hindu legends, the Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand, India was built in the 8th century AD by Jagad Guru Adi Shankaracharya, an 8th-century Hindu philosopher and theologian. However, some sources say the temple was originally built by the Pandavas, legendary figures from the Indian epic Mahabharata. The temple is located next to the site of an even earlier temple built by the Pandavas.

According to legend, the Pandavas built the temple after seeking Lord Shiva's help to atone for their sins after the Kurukshetra War. Shiva escaped them by taking the form of a bull, but the Pandavas followed him and the bull broke apart into a corridor. The hump of the bull is said to have manifested at Kedarnath, where the temple was built at the spot where Shiva is believed to have appeared as a Jyotirlinga, an illustration of cosmic light. The Pandavas were also said to have pleased Shiva by doing penance in Kedarnath.

Another legend says that twin sages named Nar and Narayan asked Shiva to live on Earth permanently at Kedarnath as a reward for their long meditation. It's also believed that Shiva meditated at Kedarnath for a long time, and the temple marks his presence from ancient times.

The Kedarnath Temple in Uttarakhand, India is said to have been built in the Katyuri style by the Kumaoni Katyuri kings. The Katyuri style is a pre-medieval spire format that is an extension of the Nagara style, an early medieval north Indian temple architecture. The temple is known for its sculptures and is considered one of the best creations in Uttarakhand. Some say that Maharaja Janmejay, the grandson of the Pandavas, built the temple, while others say it was built by Nitesh Singh Rajput, also the grandson of the Pandavas. Some believe that Adi Shankaracharya reconstructed the temple, which was originally built by the Pandavas thousands of years ago. The temple is made of large, heavy, and evenly cut grey slabs of stone.
