The last show of a long tour leg, a very tired band, a small venue (capacity 300) in a lovely, quiet upstate New York village (population around 3,000)...all the appearances indicated a calm little gig, a gentle sendoff for Alan Doyle and his Beautiful Beautiful Band (plus special guest Adam Baldwin) on the Road Back Home after weeks of travel and gigs. And all the appearances were wrong. The Center For The Arts Of Homer (located in a beautiful old church) gig was an absolute barn-burner of a show, with roof thoroughly raised (with respect and returned to place with care) and floor duly lowered, with singers who sounded like 10 times their actual number, and with dancers of all ages (the little girls with the headphones would have won any prizes I might have had to hand out). There was a (granted) song request from a young married couple, who re-danced their wedding dance as Alan sang their wedding song (he later autographed their request sign), chats and pics with the littlest and sweetest show attendees, and one of the liveliest Sponsor Groups I have ever seen at any show. And did I mention the dancing?! All in all, it was exactly the show, exactly the crowd, this weary band needed to close out this tour leg on the highest of all notes and perhaps the best day-after-his-birthday gift Alan has ever been given. Though I am guessing all hands slept quite soundly as the bus travelled Home. Center For The Arts, Homer, New York. May 18, 2024
