Plymouth is a great place with much to shout about, but did you know we’re also now proudly England’s first Compassionate City for people at end of life?

Being a compassionate city is all about recognising that care for one another at times of crisis and loss is not simply a task solely for health and social services but that we all have a role to play. It’s about turning aspiration into action so that when it comes to death, dying and bereavement – which affect us all – we not only talk more openly but work together to ensure no-one in our community feels left behind.

With city-wide networks working in partnership with Plymouth City Council, this week has been about celebrating the inspirational way schools, employers, places of worship and voluntary groups are already making a difference by ensuring they walk the talk, adopting a more compassionate approach to those whose lives they touch.

This is a fantastic foundation upon which to build. It’s not about everyone being a doctor, nurse or social worker, it’s having a heart to do the ‘small’ things that can make a big difference to someone at end of life, the person caring for them, or someone who’s bereaved.

How could you help? Look out for the starfish or visit www.plymouthacompassionatecity.co.uk to find out.
