When it's celebrated
ganesh Visarjan is usually celebrated on the last day of the Ganeshotsav festival, but some devotees may perform it on other days. 

Why it's celebrated

The ritual symbolizes the return of Lord Ganesha to Mount Kailash and his removal of obstacles from devotees' lives. 

How it's performed

The idol is immersed in a river, pond, or lake, or at home in a vessel filled with clean water and Gangajal. Devotees may chant mantras and prayers, and offer modak, laddu, and fruits to the idol. After the immersion, the water is poured under a peepal tree or into a pot. 

Environmental concerns
In recent years, the immersion of idols made from non-biodegradable materials and the use of poisonous paints has led to water pollution. Some people are choosing to let the clay idols disintegrate in a barrel of water at home, and then spreading the clay in their garden.
