Eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE) is a painful condition that occurs when the immune system overreacts, and the esophagus becomes inflamed and doesn't contract properly.

The condition is triggered when a food allergy, seasonal allergies, or acid reflux cause an overabundance of white blood cells to pool in the esophagus.

If left untreated, the chronic inflammation caused by EOE can lead to scarring and permanent narrowing of the esophagus due to formation of excessive fibrous tissue.

In this video, Jim Lim, MD, who is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine and part of the medical staff at Princeton Medical Center’s Center for Digestive Health, discusses this chronic condition.
