Trying Team Alligator with dxwrapper, setting the framerate to 25fps seems to help with the sound issues, however overriding it with the native resolution for the video caused calibration issues, hence the loss of control and crash, or maybe it was damage from the engagement?!? No such issues at the preferred game resolution.

I think this is about as good as it gets for now.
