Major General George Gordon Meade's Army of the Potomac and General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia met at the Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. After three days of fighting, that town would be the site of the bloodiest battle on American soil and the bloodiest battle in American History. Day one saw Confederate forces capture the town, but Union forces would fortify the hills and ridges outside of the town. A. P. Hill's Third Corps and Richard Ewell's Second Corps would clash with John Reynold's First Corps and Oliver Otis Howard's Eleventh Corps on the first day. On the second day, Confederate Corps commander, James Longstreet, attacked the Union left flank at Devils den, Little Round top, and the Wheatfield. this animated battle map depicts that fight.
