Diatomaceous earth (Diatomite) contains fossilized diatoms. The cell wall of these microscopic algae is made of silica. Diatomaceous earth has many uses, as an insulation material, filter material, abrasive, and it was also used to make dynamite. Some deposits in Germany are from the time between the ice age, about 100000 years old.
