This video is the third in a series on the NSW Lang Government and the constitutional crises it faced - or provoked. In this video I look at the battle between the Commonwealth and NSW Governments over debt and money during the Great Depression, which resulted in the State withdrawing all its money, in cash, from the banks to prevent the Commonwealth from seizing it.

I also address the Commonwealth's legislative responses, culminating in legislation to override a State tax on mortgages, which the Governor-General, Sir Isaac Isaacs thought was probably unconstitutional due to the absence of a head of legislative power to support it. Isaacs' communications with the King about whether he should refuse assent to the bill, and why he did not, are also discussed.
