We had set out to explore in January, 2022 the 610 square kilometre Kumbhalgarh Wildife Sanctuary, one of the largest wildlife sanctuary in Rajasthan, located in the central Aravali mountain region,.
The gracious and hospitalble cousin duos, Maharaj Kumar Raghvendra Singh ji Ranawat of Kumbhalgarh and Kush Mahendra Pal Singh ji, had invited us to come stay at their rustic and charming Junagarh Lodge. The company and the lodge turned out to be exactly the kind of place where we thrive. The lodge is beautifully simple and blends well with it's jungle surroundings. A place to chill and let your wild side be active. The traditional gastronomic sensibilities of the cousins fits into our own and soon after arriving we were in deep discussion on flora and fauna, the magnificent Kumbhalgarh Fort, and then of course food. We decided to set up a campfire hearth for making laal maas, the goat meat delicacy of Rajasthan that is seasoned with local spices. Our discussion hit upon the history and variations of laal maas recipes depending on family and region. The experience a delight, the company wonderful.
