Melbourne, a cosmopolitan city of three million people, is well known for its sports, theatre, arts and extensive parks and gardens, but perhaps best recognised for its historic 'W' class trams.

It all began in the late 1880's with the development of a substantial cable tram system , followed by the first permanent electric services in 1906. MELBOURNE BY TRAM begins with a glimpse of those early years.

Today, the system operates with 600 trams running over 27 main routes and 235 kilometres of track, making it one of the largest in the world. This video provides an insight into its operations.

You will be taken on a journey through some of Melbourne's first established suburbs, travelling over four routes selected for their variation in tram types and subjects of interest along the way.

This quality production also features the Fleet Control Centre, substation operation, depot scenes, tourist trams, heritage aspects of the city and suburbs, Melbourne attractions and much, much more.
