In this Funkumentary, we explore Mari Illustrious Makinami's contentious role in the Evangelion continuity. As she accumulated screen-time in the following two films, Mari clashed with the likes of Asuka Shinkinami Langley as a supporting character in Evangelion 3.0 You can (not) redo until ultimately, becoming Shinji Ikari's love interest in Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice upon a time. But other than being a love interest, what exactly was Mari's role? Was she even necessary to differentiate Neon Genesis Evangelion from the Rebuild series? Or did her role transcend Hideaki Anno's original intentions?
