ORVIS fly casting instructor Peter Kutzer is back to show you the secrets to a achieving a delicate fly presentation. Sometimes you really need the fly to land gently when fishing dry flies. If you drop the rod tip too early on the presentation cast, the fly line doesn't roll out completely and instead "crashes" to the surface. This is what happens when your fly really hits the surface hard.

Peter shows how the rod tip should stop at or around eye level to let the forward cast loop roll out. Only then should you lower the rod tip. By keeping the line moving more horizontally, you give the line time to roll out above the water's surface, which lets the fly flutter downward more gently. Practice these skills and you'll be well on the way to tricking fussy trout!
