The Tepozteco Hill or El Tepozteco National Park has been a place of worship since pre-Hispanic times because the image of Ometochtli Tepoztécatl, the minor god of pulque, also associated with the moon and plant fertility, was venerated at the top.

Today, purification ceremonies are still performed. Climbing it may require from 30 minutes for the most athletic and who know the way up to three hours for those of us who are not in good condition. Your effort is rewarded with a great view of the valley where the magical town of Tepoztlán Morelos sits.

The National Park is nestled in the Sierra del Ajusco, local stories tell that from its mountains emanates a powerful positive energy which would be accentuated on March 21, the date of the spring equinox in which hundreds of visitors flock.

The Tepozteco Archaeological Zone is located more than 2,000 meters above sea level and 600 meters above the valley of Tepoztlán. This vestige was built between 1,150 and 1,350 AD.

The pyramid known as the Casa del Tepozteco is 9.50 meters high and in it was found the idol Dos Conejos (representation of Ometochtli) that was destroyed by the friars during the evangelization.

Bring water, comfortable and safe shoes to climb the hill, and take your time going up and down. It is well worth the effort for the beautiful views from the top.
