For this week's episode, we are covering the most simple way to change your background without actually changing your background.

If I were just starting out with studio portraits and I were looking for a recommendation on which one background color to purchase, it would likely just be a white background, especially if no white walls were available. The reason for this is because you can quickly and easily change your background color from white to varying degrees of gray, simply by just turning off your background lights.

For the pure white look, we have a 400 watt strobe with a MagMod Reflector XL and MagSphere XL attached. Depending on the scenario, I may end up using two strobes to create the pure white background. But either way, by turning off the background lights while shooting against a white background, you are immediately able to come away with a gray background. Now, the lightness or darkness of the gray will be determined by how close your subject and keylight are to the background. The further that you are able to move them both away from the background, the darker gray you will end up with (assuming no other settings are changing aside from distance).

IMO, It's the quickest and most cost-effective way to get two different looks in a studio setting.
