NASCAR history was almost completely different. After Warner Hodgdon bought 50% of Junior Johnson's team in late 1982, they expanded to two cars for 1984. Darrell Waltrip was a free agent after 1983 and not too enthusiastic about having a teammate. It was the perfect time for Dale Earnhardt to drive for Johnson.

As Junior tells The Scene Vault, they had a contract signed until Budweiser called. Waltrip was re-signed and Earnhardt returned to Richard Childress.
