The foot is packed with muscles, from the interossei, to the lumbricals, to the abductor hallucinations and more. These are the intrinsic muscles of the foot, meaning that they reside in the foot itself. Unlike the extrinsic muscles of the foot, such as the halucis flexor longus that is located in the lower leg.

Rarely do we give much thought to these muscles, let alone train them!

And, because most of us wear shoes with thick soles and narrow toe boxes, these muscles often become weak. At the same time, we lose the sense of proprioception - the feedback that should come from these muscles shortening and contracting in response to the terrain.

Training the intrinsic muscles of the foot can reduce falls and injuries, can improve stability, and can even translate to greater running speed and jumping height.

How do we train them? One option is to use a variety of foot strengthening exercises and to use tools like toe spacers.

However, I feel this could be a very time-consuming process. Better, then, is to find ways to integrate training the intrinsic muscles of the foot into your existing workouts and lifestyle.

Watch the video to find out how. Enjoy!
