A compression test is an essential diagnostic tool that can help you determine the health of your outboard motor. In this video, John will show you how to do a compression test on a Yamaha outboard, specifically our 2009 Yamaha T60.

Results vary depending on whether the outboard is a four-stroke or a two-stroke. Good results for two-strokes should be around 110-130 PSI, and 180-210 PSI for four-strokes. The other thing you’re looking for is consistency across all of the cylinders. You shouldn’t see more than a five or 10 percent fluctuation between cylinders as you test them individually. As you’ll see when we get the results of our compression test on this outboard, it is in excellent condition.
