I wanted to show you that great fatwood can be found in dead pine branches where they join the tree. The Virginia Pine branch I chose for the demo seemed “snapping” dry throughout, but not so much! The dead pine needles and snapping branch tips fooled me. It was actually still mostly alive.
I was pleased to find the butt end of the branch contained the usual 4 inches of rich fatwood, but it was very moist! I decided to proceed anyway and see how well it would ignite with my Ferro Rod.
