In this video, Gold Rush!, released in 1988 for the Atari ST by Sierra On-Line.
The gold rush in on! Sell your land, pack your bags and grab the next ride out, because fortune lies 2500 miles away.
We play as Jerrod, a young earning a meager living in Brooklyn, New York. Our goal is to go west and join the mad rush for riches in sunny California, harvesting gold and becoming rich. We have 3 different ways to do the trip, all playable for different runs all full of "local" dangers and puzzles to solve:
1 Through the Gulf of Panama on foot (no Panama Canal existed in 1840, sorry);
2 Across the heartland by stagecoach, wagon train and canal boats;
3 By becoming a seafarer and taking the long trip down to Cape Horn and up again to California.
The developer claims that everything in Gold Rush! is historically and geographically accurate but I cannot guarantee for them as I'm not well versed in american history or geography.
The game's graphics are a bit primitive, 8-bit-like and the color palette is odd due to the fact that Gold Rush! is a port from PC MS-DOS with EGA/CGA but not VGA. The sound is good if you lower the volume to zero. Playability is ok.
Here you'll find intro and gameplay.

All footage taken from original hardware machines and upscaled to 1080P.
