The War of the Ring was a massive conflict at the end of the Third Age, waged by the Dark Lord Sauron against the Free Peoples in order to recover the One Ring and gain dominion over the entire continent.

Along with Frodo's Quest for Mount Doom to destroy the ring, it comprises the plot line of The Lord of the Rings.

The war pitted Sauron and his armies of orcs, trolls, evil men and other dark creatures against the allied forces of the Men of the West (Gondor and Rohan), the Elves and the Dwarves, aided by the Istari, the Ents of Fangorn Forest, the Army of the Dead of Dunharrow and the Great Eagles of the Misty Mountains.

The War of the Ring had consequences throughout most of Middle-earth. Thanks to Sauron's defeat, Aragorn was able to rise to the throne of Gondor and created the Reunited Kingdom, thus becoming King Elessar. The Reunited Kingdom included Arnor and Gondor and was allied with Erebor, the kingdom of Dale and Rohan.

Éomer began to rule Rohan and the caverns within the Hornburg, called the Glittering Caves, were inhabited by a group of Dwarves led by Gimli. The tower of Orthanc was entrusted to the Ents.

Elrond's sons, Elrohir and Elladan, stayed in Rivendell and Arwen married Aragorn. After the War, Celeborn and Thranduil shared Mirkwood, which was renamed Greenwood. The part that Celeborn kept was called East Lórien. Legolas, for his part, left with a group of elves and formed a colony of elves in Ithilien.

The Shire continued its happy life, but with a new law, no being who was not a hobbit could pass its borders. Samwise Gamgee was Mayor of the Shire for many years.

Near the end of the Third Age of the Sun, Gandalf, Frodo Baggins, Bilbo Baggins, Elrond, Galadriel and most of the High Elves sailed away on an Elven ship to Aman and were never seen again in Middle-earth. Years later, Celeborn sailed away to Aman following the path of his wife Galadriel.
