Brief History
Guiuan is widely known for three significant events in history
• In 1521, Ferdinand Magellan, the first European to set foot on Philippine soil, landed in Homonhon Island.
• In 1944, the American Forces landed on the island of Suluan where they fought their first battle in the Philippine territory three days before Gen. Mac Arthur stormed the beaches of Leyte.
• In 1949, thousands of displaced white Russian refugees appealed for new homes in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution. More than 5,000 of them settled in Tubabao Island where a veritable Russian community thrived until their eventual resettlement to countries like Australia and South America.

Other interesting sites and attractions
• 16th Century Immaculate Conception Church
The Immaculate Conception Parish Church commonly known as Guiuan Church is classified as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. The stone church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception, was built by the early Jesuits in 1718[3] and renovated in 1844 by Father Manuel Valverde and Pedro Monasterio by adding a transept and baptistery.

• St. Anthony de Padua Pilgrim Church
The church is known to locals and pilgrims around Eastern Visayas because of its miraculous nature. Saint Anthony of Padua is considered the patron saint for lost items, articles, people, or even spiritual goods. Many people come to implore Saint Anthony for even the most improbable wishes, which he is said to grant.

• Quincentennial Markers in Calicoan, Homonhon, and Suluan Islands
Three of the Quincentennial Markers were unveiled in Veterans Park on Calicoan Island, in Sitio Caltilado in Homonhon Island, and in Suluan during the 500th Anniversary of the Philippine Part in the First Circumnavigation of the World. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines has set 34 markers along the path of the first circumnavigation of the Philippines.
