The Irish upset the defending co-national champion Wolverines in the 1998 opener for both teams. Michigan dominated the first half, but missed two field goals which kept the Irish within a touchdown at half time. Led by Jarious Jackson and Autry Denson, the Irish dominated the 2nd half, and won 36-20.
