Just down the road from Granite Falls, WA along the Mountain Loop Highway ... there's a persistent set of ice caves that reveal themselves beginning in mid-July. About a mile and half trail leads through old growth forest to the base of a massive and spectacular cliff. In the shade of the cliff, at the base of an avalanche chute lie the Ice Caves.

Before flying there we checked all the usual resources: Air Control, TFRs, Forest Service Website, and Seattle Sectional. Interestingly, the Forest Services encourages recreational drones as long as they don't fly in a wilderness area and obey some common sense rules ... like don't bother the wildlife. The sectional clearly delineated wildness areas nearby, and demonstrated we weren't in violation.

WARNING: There is falling rock here. Be alert. And entering the ice caves can be deadly dangerous due to falling ice and rock. Resist the temptation.
