Sayyidnā 'Ubayy ibn Kaʿb (raḍiya -llāhu ʿanh) was a companion of the Prophet ﷺ and a person of high esteem in the early Muslim community. He was one of the first to accept Islām and pledge allegiance.

The Prophet ﷺ said to 'Ubayy, "Allāh has ordered me recite Qur'ān to you." Ubayy asked, "Did Allāh mention me by name to you?" The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allāh has mentioned your name to me." On that Ubayy started weeping. (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 4960)

He was one of the few who put the Qur'ānic sūrahs into writing and had a muṣḥaf of his own. Following the Prophet's ﷺ death, he was one of the twenty-five ḥuffāẓ, people who knew the Qur'ān completely by heart. He was the greatest reciter of the Qur'ān, and the Imām of Madīnah during the reign of the rightly guided Khulafā.

He was part of the consultative group (mušāwara) to which Sayyidnā Abū Bakr (raḍiya -llāhu ʿanh) referred many problems.
