We all love a quirky British oddity - especially when it involves pubs and beer.

Piel Island is a really beautiful place, just off the coast near Barrow in Furness and close to Walney Island. We take Piel Ferry across to visit to The Ship Inn and the unusual thing about this pub is that the pub landlord is also the king of the island. Crowned in a seemingly ancient ceremony, some say this dates back to 1487, when Lambert Simnel arrived with a bunch of German mercenaries - planning to march on London to seize the crown of England from Henry VII.

Alternatively, the whole thing was created by Victorians - presumably to get the tourists in. Either way, it's a charming thing and a day out via the ferry to Piel Island is a day well spent.
