How to remove a patrol gearbox to gain access to the clutch, flywheel and rear main seal.

I recently bought a Series 2 Gu Patrol with the ZD30di that needs a lot of work done, including a new clutch. The most difficult part of this job is the removal of the gearbox and transfer case once all accessories have been disconnected. I had access to a workshop with a hoist and transmission jack and I still had difficulty in removing the gearbox and transfer case.

Once everything is disconnected, I pried between the bellhousing and block to separate the gearbox. Once the bellhousing is off the locating dowels, you can start to twist the gearbox and transfer to gain clearance between the started motor housing and the drivers footwell. On removal of the gearbox, I rotated anticlockwise and on install I rotated clockwise. I found that install was much easier so I would advise rotating the gearbox clockwise. Alternatively, a hammer can be used to push the footwell in to gain clearance if you're a rough mechanic. My biggest tip for removal and installations of the patrol gearbox would be to remove the crossmember and gear sticks and then twist the gearbox clockwise to clear the tunnel.
