A much-changed Arsenal side advanced to the fourth round of the English League Cup following a 5-1 win at home to third-tier Bolton Wanderers on Wednesday.

Mikel Arteta gave a debut to 16-year-old goalkeeper Jack Porter with fellow academy youngsters Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri and Joshua Nichols also starting at the Emirates in a comfortable victory for the Premier League side.

Arsenal will now travel to Deepdale to face Preston with the last 16 tie due to take place at the end of October.

Meanwhile, Liverpool got the defence of their English League Cup title off to a winning start with an impressive 5-1 win over 10-man West Ham.

After Jarell Quansah put through his own net in the 21st minute to silence the home crowd, Diogo Jota quickly equalised and shortly after the break he put Liverpool in front for the first time.

The visitors had their chances to get back on level terms after that, but Mo Salah opened up a two goal lead with 16 minutes remaining after coming off the bench on the hour.

Moments later West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez was sent off following a crude challenge on Salah - extinguishing any remaining hope of a comeback - and two goals right at the end for Cody Gakpo completed a comfortable night for Arne Slot's Liverpool.

West Ham have now lost three of their last four matches, increasing the pressure on new head coach Julen Lopetegui.
