This is the Volkswagen Polo GTI 2022 in Pure White. On the road prices start at £28,065, and the one tested is £30,655.

It has impressive stats for a hot hatch, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with 204bhp and 320Nm, weighing less than 1,400kg and a 0-60 time in 6.5 seconds. But it misses the vital part that makes a hot hatch, a hot hatch... and that is, there's no manual gearbox. It's a good car but it's missing that main ingredient.
